Meet Our Trainees
The 2022- 2023 Cohort
Get to know a bit about our program participants by reading about their educational and professional goals. Their work in the TUSCEB program has been facilitated by one of our wonderful Research Mentors.

"This opportunity will enable be to cultivate skills that I can leverage in many different aspects of my work. I am passionate about stem cell culture and have taken an interest in many of my professors personal research projects."

Zeth Carmona
"The expectations that I have of this program are to be able to enrich my knowledge in stem cells and regenerative medicine to be able to create new types of stem cell therapy to be able to help elders. My interest aligned in this program is to acquire more knowledge and experience to be able to work in a biotechnology company that will create new types of regenerative medicine using stem cells. My academic goal in the near future is to apply to graduate school to obtain my Ph.D. because with the knowledge and experience that I will acquire I will be able to help more people. My project is about analyzing how aging affects the bone marrow, and based on the information obtained, we will create a new type of regenerative medicine treatment for elders."

Laura Gonzalez Rodriguez
"Being a first-gen college student, I was very intimidated by lab culture and being in a position where I would need to figure many things out on my own. I'm very grateful to have such thoughful mentors that I can lean on whenever I reach any stumbling blocks in my research. I'd definitely recommend anyone thinking about joining the program to apply."

Cynthia Navarro
"Estoy muy feliz de haberme unido al programa. La facultad del departamento de BiologÃa Molecular Celular ha demostrado ser muy atenta y comprensiva con las necesidades de todos sus estudiantes. Estoy agradecida de haber podido construir relaciones tan positivas con otras personas que trabajan en el mismo departamento que yo."

Allyzza Torres Raya
"The expectations I have for this program is to learn more research skills, methods, and techniques. My expectation is to be challenged and learn new skills that include problem solving. My interest which align with this program would be the study of immunology, bone marrow, and cell fate. I am fascinated by these topics and I want explore and learn more about these types of research studies. My professional goals would be professional development, learning more about health related research topics, and connecting more with my colleagues through community outreach events. The specific focus area I plan on working on is flow cytometry, intraperitoneal injection in mice, blood collection samples, and animal husbandry. "

Jose Avila-Garcia
"From this program, I expect to learn how to plan my own research experiments and studies, as well as conduct them. I hope to gain more knowledge and skills in the new and innovating field of regenerative medicine through stem cell therapy. I expect to learn more about working in the research and development area in both academia and bio tech industry. I also have high enthusiasm to network with new people in the same career plan as me as I plan my future into graduate school. I am interest in furthering my career to attend graduate school and obtain a doctorate degree with a spcialization in regenerative medicine. This program aligns with my goal because it will train me for research presentations, updates, and much more growth in my career in academia. My academic goals are to attend graduate school and obtain a doctorate degree. With this degree I would like emphasizing on stem cell biology and regenerative medicine particularly in the cardiovascular and muscular systems. My professional goal would then align with my academic goals since I would ultimately like to be a college professor while having a research lab or working in a bio tech company. My research project focuses on exploring extra-cellular matrix effects on cellular fate with the use of microfluidic devices. In my free time I also love playing sports, composing music, and reading."

Maximiliano Gonzalez Borba
"I would highly encourage any prospective TUSCEB members to join the program. They provide you with personalized mentoring that caters to the specific needs of your research project. My mentor that I was paired with has been exceptional at breaking down many of these complex concepts in a way thats been much easier for me to digest. Thanks so much Dr. Cleary!"

"My research project encompasses lots of work around Phylogenetics and thanks to Dr. McTavish, I've been having one of the most memorable experiences in my life. There's nothing more fulfilling than seeing all of the fruits of your work come to fruition after investing so much time into your project."

Dr. McCloskey and Mr. Thomas have done a wonderful job at creating this experience for me. Our trip to Biosphere2 in Arizona was the first time I'd ever been outside of California and was incredibly insightful for my lab research as well."
